The Ahrida Synagogue in Istanbul’s old Jewish quarter is notable for its Romaniote heritage, a distinctive wooden Torah ark and a boat-shaped bimah that interest architectural and religious-history visitors.
The Ahrida Synagogue is a historic Jewish house of worship in the Balat neighbourhood on the western shore of Istanbul’s Golden Horn. It is traditionally associated with the Romaniote community originally from the Ohrid region.
The interior contains an especially notable wooden bimah fashioned in the shape of a boat, a rare surviving example of this feature. The building continues to be of religious and historical interest and is one of the older synagogues in the city.
The synagogue dates back to the early centuries of Ottoman Istanbul’s Jewish communities and took its name from Jews who migrated from Ohrid (Ahrida). Over time it served Romaniote and later Sephardic congregants and has undergone restoration and conservation work.
Located in the Balat quarter on the European side of Istanbul, the synagogue lies near the Golden Horn and the historic peninsula’s northwestern approaches.
