Aguateca is a Classic Maya archaeological site in the central lowlands of Petén Department, Guatemala, notable for its well-preserved urban and defensive remains from the Late Classic period. It occupies a defensible limestone outcrop and was a regional center during the Classic Maya era.
On-site highlights include an acropolis of elite residences and administrative buildings, terraced residential areas and visible defensive works that reflect the site’s strategic position. Archaeologists recorded concentrations of household items and architectural collapse layers that point to a rapid abandonment event.
Aguateca was occupied during the Late Classic Maya period and was abandoned in the terminal Classic century amid regional conflict and political change; intensive archaeological excavations in the late 20th century documented the site’s collapse and recovery of in situ artifacts.
The site lies in the Petén lowlands of northern Guatemala on a limestone ridge above surrounding low-lying forest and wetlands, within the broader Maya archaeological landscape of central Petén.
