Agra Fort
Historical Site Massive Mughal-era fort adjacent to the Taj Mahal
Red sandstone ramparts and imperial palaces at Agra Fort record Mughal court life-Diwan‑i‑Am, Diwan‑i‑Khas and private chambers-set within massive defensive walls; tourists visit for Mughal architecture and often combine it with the nearby Taj Mahal.
Agra Fort is a large 16th-century Mughal fort and palace complex in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, built primarily as a fortified royal residence under Emperor Akbar. The red sandstone fortress contains multiple palaces, halls and mosques and served as a major Mughal administrative and military centre.
Within the fort’s walls are principal structures such as the Diwan-i-Aam (public audience hall), Diwan-i-Khas (private audience hall), Jahangiri Mahal and the white marble Moti Masjid, all set around courtyards and gardens. Several chambers and balconies offer views across the Yamuna River toward the Taj Mahal, which lies roughly 2.5 kilometres from the fort across the water.
Akbar initiated construction in the mid-16th century, establishing Agra Fort as a Mughal seat of power; later emperors, including Shah Jahan, altered and embellished palace buildings and interiors. The fort served both as a defensive stronghold and the principal imperial residence until the court shifted later in the Mughal period.
Agra Fort is located in the city of Agra in northern India, on the right bank of the Yamuna River, within the historic core of the city and accessible from central Agra.
- Construction period: Construction began under Emperor Akbar around 1565 and major phases were completed by the 1570s, establishing the fort as a Mughal military and residential complex.
- Location and materials: The fort is a massive red sandstone palatial complex located on the banks of the Yamuna River, approximately 2.5 kilometres from the Taj Mahal across the river.

Tips for Visiting Agra Fort #
- Arrive at opening (or late afternoon) to avoid the midday heat and the largest tour groups, and to capture the best light when the fort's sandstone glows and views toward the Taj Mahal are clearest.
- Head early to the fort's eastern ramparts and private palace quarters for the classic framed view of the Taj Mahal - many visitors linger in the central audience halls while these vantage points stay quieter.
- Hire a licensed guide or pick up a good audio guide at the gate and move past the busiest halls first; a guide helps you prioritise highlights and saves time so you can explore lesser-seen chambers before crowds build.
