Main image

The Acueducto de los Milagros is a Roman aqueduct ruin in Extremadura near the city of Mérida, Spain, and represents part of the ancient water-supply infrastructure for Augusta Emerita. It dates to the Roman imperial period.

A long line of stone piers and arches runs across a shallow valley, forming a prominent linear ruin that can be viewed from nearby roads and walking paths. The surviving section is notable for its scale relative to the surrounding landscape and for the contrast between the stone piers and brick or mortar arches.

Constructed by Roman engineers in the imperial era to carry water to Augusta Emerita, the aqueduct functioned as part of the city’s supply network. Over centuries the structure fell out of use and much of the conduit was dismantled, leaving the elevated arcade that survives today.

The remains sit just north of Mérida in the Extremadura region of western Spain, within easy reach of the city and its other Roman monuments. The site is surrounded by agricultural land and low hills characteristic of the Mérida plain.

  • Context: Located just north of the city of Mérida, the aqueduct formed part of the Roman water supply system for Augusta Emerita and is one of several Roman hydraulic structures preserved in the area.
  • Structure: Built in the Roman Imperial period, it is the visible remains of a longer conduit that carried water across a valley using a sequence of arches.
