Main image

Acatenango is a prominent stratovolcano in central Guatemala, located near the city of Antigua and adjacent to the frequently active Volcán de Fuego. It is one of the high peaks of the Guatemalan volcanic chain and a popular objective for mountaineers.

Trekking routes lead to high camps and to the summit ridge, where hikers commonly camp overnight to watch sunrise and to observe eruptive bursts from nearby Volcán de Fuego at relatively close range. The route is demanding and typically undertaken as a guided multi-day hike.

Acatenango and its volcanic neighbours have shaped local settlement and agriculture for centuries; the volcano itself has a long eruptive history, while nearby Fuego remains the active cone producing frequent eruptions. Volcanic activity and eruptions have influenced local landforms and human use of the highlands.

Rising above the Antigua region in the Chimaltenango Department, Acatenango sits within the central highlands of Guatemala and is accessible by trailheads near nearby towns and tour operators based in Antigua.

  • Hiking and views: Popular for multi-day hikes that camp on the slopes to watch sunrise and to view frequent explosive activity from neighboring Volcán de Fuego.
  • Summit elevation and location: The volcano's summit reaches near 4,000 metres and is a major objective for experienced trekkers in the Antigua and Chimaltenango region.

How to Get to Acatenango #

Acatenango sits above Antigua Guatemala, which is the usual gateway. From Antigua (the town), most trekkers take a shared shuttle, taxi or tour-van for the 30-60 minute drive up into the Acatenango/Chimaltenango highlands to the trailhead (many operators offer hotel pickup in Antigua). The hike itself begins at the trailhead; expect a short walk from the parking/pickup point to the official trail start. If you are coming from Guatemala City, allow roughly 45-60 minutes by car to Antigua and then the shuttle to the trailhead.

Tips for Visiting Acatenango #

  • Best time is the dry season (roughly November-April); aim for an overnight hike so you reach the summit/camp at night to see dramatic Fuego eruptions and morning light on the peaks.
  • Use the common trailhead from the villages on Acatenango's southern flank (Alotenango/La Soledad area) - most guided departures and porters start there rather than from Antigua itself.
  • Many visitors underestimate altitude and acclimatization: spend a day in Antigua (or at lower elevation) before the ascent to reduce the risk of AMS and increase odds of reaching the summit.

Best Time to Visit Acatenango #

Visit during the dry season (November-April) for the clearest views and safest conditions for summit hikes.

Dry season (best for trekking)
November-April · Daytime at lower elevations ~10-20°C; summit nights often below 0°C
Clearer skies and drier trails make summit attempts and views of Fuego/Acatenango much more reliable; nights on the summit camp are cold and can drop below freezing.
Wet season (avoid for climbs)
May-October · Cooler, wetter conditions; summit nights often below 0°C
Frequent rain, cloud cover, and muddy or slippery trails reduce visibility and make technical sections harder; not ideal for camping on the volcano.
