Abu Gorab is an archaeological site near Abusir on the west bank of the Nile that preserves the remains of Old Kingdom sun temples. The site is notable for its large brick foundations, paved courtyards and the base elements of obelisk constructions connected to royal solar cults of the 5th Dynasty.
Open-air ruins and exposed structural layouts allow visitors to see the plan and ceremonial elements of sun temples rather than intact monumental architecture; interpretation focuses on ritual use and Egypt’s Old Kingdom religious practice.
The temples were built under 5th Dynasty rulers as dedicated cult complexes for the sun god and formed part of a broader funerary and cult landscape that includes nearby pyramids and mastaba cemeteries. Excavation and study over the 20th century have recorded the plans and finds from the site.
