Abramtsevo Colony

Abramtsevo Colony is the late 19th-century artists’ colony established around the Abramtsevo estate north of Moscow in Moscow Oblast. It served as a practical centre for painters, sculptors, architects and craftspeople exploring a national Russian style.

Present-day visitors encounter the manor house with museum displays, restored artists’ cottages and workshops, and a landscaped park with decorative structures created or commissioned by the colony. The site preserves examples of ceramics, woodwork and other arts produced by the Abramtsevo circle.

The estate was transformed into an artists’ centre in the late 19th century under patrons and leading artists of the period, who used the site as a studio, exhibition space and place to experiment with folk art and national motifs.

Abramtsevo lies in Moscow Oblast, to the north of Moscow, within reach of the city by road and rail services from the capital.
