Abhayagiri vihāra
Religious Site Ancient Buddhist monastery complex and archaeological ruins
The Abhayagiri vihāra complex in Anuradhapura contains large Buddhist monastic ruins and stupas from Sri Lanka’s ancient period; pilgrims and archaeology visitors explore its carved pillars and relic sites.
Abhayagiri vihāra is an extensive ancient Buddhist monastic complex in the Anuradhapura region of north-central Sri Lanka. It developed into one of the largest monastic institutions during the Anuradhapura period and contains large stupas, terraces and monastic ruins.
The complex includes the remains of major stupas, assembly halls and residential terraces used by monks, reflecting its role as a major centre of Buddhist practice and scholastic activity for many centuries. The visible ruins today comprise masonry platforms, brick stupas and carved stonework.
Founded in the ancient period of Sri Lankan history, the site expanded and changed over several centuries as successive kings and patrons supported the monastic community. It declined with the fall of the Anuradhapura political centre and later centuries of abandonment and reuse.
The complex lies within Anuradhapura District in the North Central Province, on the plains that host many of Sri Lanka’s principal archaeological sites, and is accessible from the modern city of Anuradhapura.
- Archaeological significance: Extensive archaeological remains span several centuries, making the site one of the main monastic complexes in ancient Anuradhapura for both Buddhist practice and learning.
