A-Ma Temple

A‑Ma Temple is a historic temple complex on the Macau peninsula, traditionally dated to 1488 and dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu. The temple complex stands on a coastal hillside and comprises multiple pavilions, courtyards and altars reflecting centuries of local worship and maritime culture.

Visitors encounter carved doorways, incense halls and terrace viewpoints that offer both cultural interest and views toward the waterfront; the site features architecture from different periods reflecting continuous repairs and additions. It is a focal point for local festivals and traditional ritual practice.

Built by seafarers and local communities as a place of protection and prayer for mariners, the temple came to lend its name to the territory when Portuguese sailors adopted a local reference to the site. Over time the complex has been maintained and restored while remaining an active place of worship.

The temple sits in the São Lourenço (Saint Lawrence) district of Macau on the peninsula near the waterfront and historic city core.
