About the Turtle Conservation and Education Center

Serangan, the island off Bali’s south coast, was for generations a centre of the Balinese trade in sea turtles, which were caught for meat and for ceremonial feasts. The trade is illegal under Indonesian law, and the Turtle Conservation and Education Center (TCEC) opened in 2006, with backing from the provincial government and WWF Indonesia, to help end it by giving Serangan’s villagers a part in protecting turtles instead. It is now run by the island’s customary village.

The centre collects turtle eggs from beaches where they are at risk, incubates them, and keeps the hatchlings for a few weeks before releasing them to the sea; visitors can sometimes join a release. Pools and tanks hold young turtles and a few adults kept for education, mostly green, hawksbill and olive ridley turtles, with displays on turtle biology and the threats they face. The centre also runs education programmes for school groups.

It is a modest site, and a good short visit to combine with Pura Sakenan on the same island.
