About Pura Petitenget
Pura Petitenget stands just behind the sand at the end of Jalan Petitenget, on the stretch of coast between Seminyak and Batu Belig that has become one of the most fashionable on the island. Its carved gates, shrines and the old trees around them make a striking contrast with the beach clubs and luxury hotels on either side, but this is a working temple of great importance to the surrounding villages. The sea in front of it is treated as sacred, and swimming and sunbathing directly in front of the temple are not permitted.
Petitenget is one of the sea temples (pura segara) strung along Bali’s south-west coast between Uluwatu and Tanah Lot, said to guard the island against harmful forces from the sea. Ceremonies here, above all the temple’s anniversary festival, bring large processions in ceremonial dress down to the beach.
Visitors are welcome in the outer areas when appropriately dressed in a sarong and sash; bring your own, and don’t enter shrines or courtyards that are closed to non-worshippers.
History & Culture of Pura Petitenget
The name joins two Balinese words: peti, a box or chest, and tenget, sacred or spiritually charged. It is usually rendered as “sacred box” or “haunted chest”.
Local tradition ties the temple to Dang Hyang Nirartha, the Javanese priest who travelled Bali’s coast in the 16th century founding temples. In one version he rested here on his way along the coast and left a small box, the case for his betel-nut kit, in the care of a powerful spirit. In another he tamed a fearsome spirit that haunted the scrub here, whose presence had been making villagers from Kerobokan fall ill, and made it the guardian of the villages instead. Either way the shrine was built to honour that guardian, and the area is still regarded as spiritually potent.
