Museum Buleleng

Museum Buleleng is a regional museum in Singaraja, the main town of Buleleng Regency in northern Bali, Indonesia, that preserves local historical and cultural material. It serves as a repository for artifacts and displays related to the people and history of Buleleng rather than a large national museum.

The museum stands in the grounds of the old Buleleng palace, beside the Gedong Kirtya library. Its exhibition documents the life and times of the last raja of Buleleng, Anak Agung Panji Tisna, a novelist, author of Sukreni Gadis Bali, and the man credited with giving Lovina its name and championing it for tourism. Among the items on display is the typewriter he wrote on, and the galleries also trace the wider history of the region.

The most notable collection, however, is the thousands of lontar palm-leaf manuscripts. A knife was used to engrave the leaves before they were rubbed with charcoal to bring out the text, which touches on subjects such as medicine, homeopathy and witchcraft. The leaves come from a member of the palm family known as the fan tree, after their fan-like shape; they are very durable and serve many purposes. Both domestic and international visitors come to view the manuscripts, and foreign students travel here to conduct research for their studies.

Museum Buleleng (in Singaraja, north Bali) is in Singaraja town and is most easily reached by road. From Denpasar/Ngurah Rai area drive north via the Singaraja-Denpasar coastal route; the trip typically takes about 2.5-3 hours by car (roughly 80-100 km depending on route and traffic).

There are also intercity minibuses (bemo/angkot or scheduled buses) that run between Denpasar and Singaraja; once in Singaraja the museum is in the town center and reachable on foot from the main bus terminals (a short walk).
