About the Monument to King Ngam Muang#
Just as King Mengrai is revered as the founder of the Lanna Kingdom and its capital Chiang Mai, King Ngam Muang is Phayao’s local hero, praised for keeping this region independent despite Mengrai’s expansionist ambitions.
King Ngam Muang came to the throne in 1258. Eighteen years later, when Mengrai approached the city with heavily armed troops, Ngam Muang was able to seal a pact of friendship by which the two rulers promised to support each other against outside invaders. When Mengrai later founded Chiang Mai as the Lanna capital, the pact was expanded to include King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai - an alliance immortalized in the Three Kings Monument in the heart of Chiang Mai’s old city.
The monument to King Ngam Muang stands in a public park beside Kwan Phayao, the town’s great lake. At any hour you may find locals arriving with offerings to their great king.
