Wat Boromathat Chedi Temple
Buddhist temple centered around a prominent chedi
Wat Boromathat Chedi at a Glance#
About Wat Boromathat Chedi#
Built in the late 1990s to honour the life and work of the Princess Mother, the mother of King Bhumibol, this eye-catching stupa has quickly become the most recognisable icon of Mae Salong. Perched near the top of a steep hill above town, it is visible from miles around, and the views from the top-and the journey up-are truly breathtaking.
If you don’t have your own transport or hire a motorbike taxi, you face a climb of over 700 steps up from Wat Santikhiri to reach it, but once there you are rewarded with memorable views over the town and the hills of northern Thailand stretching to the horizon. The pyramid-shaped chedi looks splendid from a distance, and up close you can admire the intricate gold carvings above the doorways, though there is nothing to see inside.
