About Crystal Bay
Crystal Bay is a small white-sand bay on the west coast of Nusa Penida, looking across the strait towards Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan. A rocky islet sits in the middle of the bay, and in good conditions the water lives up to the name: you can see the coral from the deck of a boat.
Hard and soft corals cover the slopes around the islet, home to reef fish, turtles and the occasional bamboo shark. Divers come for the chance of seeing the mola mola (oceanic sunfish), which rise from deep, cold water to cleaning stations on the reef. Sightings are most likely from about July to October, peaking in August and September, and are never guaranteed.
Crystal Bay is no longer the quiet spot it was in the early 2010s. Since Nusa Penida’s tourism boom it has become one of the island’s busiest stops, with snorkelling boats from Lembongan and mainland Bali anchoring in the bay by mid-morning and a beach lined with warungs, loungers and day-trippers who arrive by road. A small temple stands on the sand. Early morning and late afternoon are far calmer, and the beach faces west for sunset.

How to Get to Crystal Bay
Most visitors arrive on a snorkelling boat trip from Nusa Lembongan or from Sanur on mainland Bali. Crystal Bay is also reachable by road, a short drive from the west-coast harbour at Toyapakeh via the village of Sakti. Fast boats link Sanur with Nusa Penida several times a day; check the operator’s safety record and the sea conditions before booking.
Snorkelling and Diving Safety at Crystal Bay
The currents here deserve respect. Water flowing through the channels between Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan can turn strong very quickly, including down-currents along the outer edge of the islet, and divers and snorkellers have died at this site. Snorkel close to the beach or the boats in the inner bay, wear fins, and do not swim out towards the open channel. Divers should go with an experienced local operator who checks the tide and current, and the outer slopes are best left to experienced divers. During mola mola season the water at depth can drop below 20°C, so a thicker wetsuit helps.
