Zwentendorf Nuclear Power Plant is a completed but never-operated nuclear reactor complex near the village of Zwentendorf in Lower Austria. The plant was constructed in the 1970s and was finished prior to a 1978 national referendum that resulted in Austria deciding not to run nuclear power plants.

As a result the reactor building was never loaded with fuel and the station never produced commercial electricity. The site is preserved largely in its completed state and today is used for guided tours, technical training and film shoots rather than power generation.

The site sits on the north bank of the Danube in Lower Austria near the village of Zwentendorf and is a short drive from regional towns north-west of Vienna.

What to See#

• Reactor building: The intact reactor building and primary containment are preserved as-built; the plant was completed but never loaded with nuclear fuel and is used for guided visits and technical training.
• Control room and turbine hall: Control room and turbine hall remain on site and are presented as part of tours explaining plant systems and decommissioning history.

Zwentendorf is about 60 km northwest of Vienna; by car it is reached via the A1 and local roads (roughly 45-60 minutes). Regional trains and buses serve nearby towns; from Tulln or the nearest train station take a local bus or taxi to the site. Tours often require pre‑booking via the official site.

• Book the guided site tour in advance - visits usually run in small groups and are the only way to go inside safely.
• Read the 1978 referendum history in Austria beforehand; locals are still candid about the plant's political role.
• The site is decommissioned but hazardous areas remain; follow guides and signage strictly.
