Zubarah Fort
Fort 18th-century Qatari fort within historic Zubarah town
On Qatar’s northwest coast, Zubarah Fort anchors the 18th-century coastal settlement and UNESCO archaeological site; visitors tour the mud-brick fort, nearby ruins and desert hinterland to study pearling-era history and coastal archaeology.
Zubarah Fort sits on the northwest coast of Qatar near the ruins of the historical town of Al Zubarah. The fort was constructed in the early 20th century and is now part of the larger Al Zubarah archaeological landscape recognized for its regional importance.
The fort itself is a small, square coastal fortification with corner towers that has been restored and fitted with exhibition space. Close by are the exposed remains of the walled trading and pearling town with streets, courtyards and house foundations spread across an extensive archaeological zone.
The fort was built in the first half of the 20th century to control the shoreline and was later conserved as an archaeological monument. The nearby town of Al Zubarah dates to the late 18th and early 19th centuries and was a regional trading and pearling centre before it was abandoned; extensive excavations have documented its urban layout and material culture.
The site lies on Qatar’s northwestern coast in the Al Shamal area, near the modern settlement of Zubarah. It is accessible by road from Doha in about one to two hours depending on route and traffic, and is set between low coastal dunes and the open Gulf waters.
- UNESCO inscription: Part of the Al Zubarah archaeological landscape inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2013.
- Location note: Located on Qatar's northwestern coast, roughly 100 kilometres northwest of central Doha by road, set adjacent to coastal dunes and the original town remains.
