Zubarah
Ruins Dry coastal town with UNESCO-listed archaeological site
The Zubarah archaeological site on Qatar’s northwest coast preserves an 18th-19th-century pearling and trading town with fort remains. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it attracts visitors interested in archaeology, desert forts and Gulf maritime history.
Zubarah is an archaeological site on the northwest coast of Qatar that preserves the remains of a fortified merchant town and surrounding settlement. The site is recognized for its extensive remains of an 18th- and early 19th-century trading and pearling community.
The excavated street plans, domestic buildings and the coastal fortification complex, together with an on-site fort that now functions as an interpretive museum. The archaeological remains illustrate the town’s role in Gulf maritime trade during its period of prosperity.
Zubarah flourished as a commercial and pearling centre in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and later declined; modern archaeological excavations have exposed the town plan and defensive works. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2013 for its cultural and historical significance.
The site sits on Qatar’s northwestern coast, northwest of the capital Doha, on a flat coastal plain with sparse modern development surrounding the protected archaeological zone.
- World Heritage status: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013 for its well-preserved remains of a Gulf merchant town and coastal fortifications.
- Visitor facilities: A small visitor centre and the fort provide orientation and displays; excavation areas are visible across the site.
