Zorkul

Zorkul is a high-altitude lake located in the eastern Pamir Mountains on the border between Afghanistan and Tajikistan, within the remote Wakhan Corridor. It is a sparsely visited freshwater lake that lies along traditional highland grazing and travel routes.

The lake is valued for its isolation and for simple trekking and wildlife viewing rather than developed facilities. Birdlife and alpine pasture around the shoreline are principal attractions for visitors who reach the area by long overland or multi-day treks.

Zorkul has long been part of local seasonal use by Wakhi and Kyrgyz herders and appears on 19th and 20th century exploratory maps of the Pamirs. Modern administration places the lake on an international border; there is no large permanent settlement on its shores.

The lake sits within the high Pamir range in eastern Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor, immediately adjacent to Tajikistan. The nearest larger centers are remote mountain towns on either side of the border; access requires travel over high mountain roads or foot routes.
