Zilkale
Monument Medieval cliffside castle overlooking Firtina Valley
A medieval cliff fortress above Turkey’s Fırtına Valley; Zilkale appeals to hikers exploring the Kaçkar foothills, river valley viewpoints and nearby rural tea-growing villages.
Zilkale is a medieval cliff-top fortress in Rize Province, perched above the Fırtına Valley in the Kaçkar Mountains of northeastern Turkey. Its position on a limestone promontory gives it a commanding view of the valley below.
The site comprises ruined defensive walls and a small keep or tower, and the principal attraction is the dramatic vantage point and the surrounding mountain landscape rather than large interiors. Visitors typically view the remaining masonry and the valley panorama.
Built in the medieval period to control the valley and local mountain passes, the fortress changed hands among regional powers and fell into ruin in later centuries; it survives today as an archaeological ruin and viewpoint.
