Adjacent to Beijing’s Forbidden City, Zhongnanhai is the central leadership and administrative compound; visitors can view its perimeter from nearby public streets, but the compound is closed to the public.
Zhongnanhai is a historic imperial garden compound in central Beijing that serves as the central headquarters for the Communist Party of China and the State Council. Its name, meaning “Central and Southern Seas,” refers to two connected lakes within the site and the area has been the political center of the Chinese state since 1949.
The site traces its origins to imperial gardens used by Ming and Qing dynasty rulers and later became the seat of republican and then communist state institutions. After 1949 it was repurposed as the principal residence and offices for national leadership, consolidating many administrative functions within the compound.
Zhongnanhai sits immediately west of the Meridian Gate of the Forbidden City in central Beijing, within walking distance of Tiananmen Square and surrounded by parkland and government buildings.

How to Get to Zhongnanhai #
Zhongnanhai is the central government compound and historical imperial garden immediately west of the Forbidden City in central Beijing; it is not open to the public. To reach the area around its perimeter, use Beijing Subway Line 1 (Tiananmen West/East) or Line 2 (stations around Qianmen/Huángchénggōng) and walk toward the northwest edge of Tiananmen/Forbidden City, keeping in mind public access is restricted and security is present.
The site is best visited visually from nearby public areas (Tiananmen Square, the northwestern approaches to the Forbidden City) rather than attempting access through the compound.

- Zhongnanhai is a high-security government compound with no public access-do not attempt entry; the only realistic way to see it is from public streets nearby.
