Zhengyangmen
Monument Historic Beijing gate at Qianmen near Tiananmen Square
Known as Qianmen, Zhengyangmen served as a major gate in Beijing’s Ming-era city wall south of Tiananmen Square; tourists pass through it en route to Qianmen Street and the old city.
Zhengyangmen, commonly known as Qianmen, is the historic southern gate of Beijing’s inner city wall, located on the capital’s central north-south axis immediately south of Tiananmen Square. The surviving gatehouse and flanking defensive structures date to the Ming dynasty and have been repaired or restored in later periods.
The complex includes a large multi-storey gate tower and an outer arrow tower connected by the former city wall and barbican; the structures illustrate Ming-era gate architecture and urban defense planning. Nearby Qianmen Street and pedestrian areas make the gate a focal point for city-centre walks and historical interpretation.
Originally constructed as part of Beijing’s city defenses in the Ming period, the gate complex has undergone repairs and reconstructions over centuries and survived major 20th-century urban changes. It now functions as a preserved historic monument and exhibition space within central Beijing.
The gate stands at the southern end of Beijing’s central axis, immediately south of Tiananmen Square and adjacent to the pedestrian Qianmen commercial street, in downtown Beijing municipality.
