Zelve Monastery

Zelve Monastery is a rock-cut monastic complex and former village in Cappadocia, Nevşehir Province, now presented as an open-air museum. The site is notable for its dense concentration of cave dwellings, churches and characteristic tuff formations.

Paths weave through three adjacent valleys of carved tuff containing residential caves, dovecotes and several small churches with surviving fresco fragments. The topography and the conical rock forms make the site compact and easily walkable in a couple of hours.

The carved settlement and monastic spaces were formed and used over many centuries during the Byzantine and later periods; the area continued to be inhabited into the 20th century and was evacuated in 1952 because of progressive erosion and rock instability. After evacuation, the site was conserved and opened for public visitation.

Zelve sits between the towns of Avanos and Göreme in the Cappadocia region of central Anatolia, within Nevşehir Province, and is part of the volcanic tuff landscape that characterizes the region.

• Abandonment and management: The site was inhabited until 1952 and is now managed as an open-air museum with marked paths; erosion led to the final evacuation in the mid-20th century.
• Best time to visit: Best visited early in the day to avoid crowds and to see interior cave spaces when lighting is softer.

• Monastic complex (three valleys): A spread-out troglodyte settlement occupying three adjacent valleys carved into tuff; the site includes dwellings, communal spaces and carved stairways connecting levels.
• Cave churches: Several rock-cut churches and chapels that preserve fresco fragments and iconographic traces dating to the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods.
• Fairy chimneys and dwellings: Clusters of conical "fairy chimney" rock formations and former residential caves converted over centuries for storage, dovecotes and living space.
