Zealand
Island Largest Danish island hosting Copenhagen and varied landscapes
Denmark’s largest island contains Copenhagen, day-trip castles like Kronborg at Helsingør, coastal cycling routes and sandy beaches used by locals and visitors.
Zealand (Danish: Sjælland) is the largest and most populous island of Denmark, forming the core of the country’s eastern region. The island includes the capital, Copenhagen, and several major historic towns and cultural sites.
The national capital with its museums and harbourfront, Renaissance castles such as Kronborg at Helsingør, and medieval churches including the royal Roskilde Cathedral. The island supports dense population centres, a developed transport network and a mix of agricultural lowlands, forests and coastal landscapes.
Historically Zealand has been the political and cultural heart of Denmark for centuries, with Copenhagen developing as the national capital and major trade port. The island’s towns and fortifications reflect medieval and later periods of Danish state formation and maritime trade.
Geographically Zealand lies east of the Jutland peninsula and west of the Swedish coast, separated from neighbouring Danish islands by straits and connected by major fixed links and bridges to the rest of Denmark.
- Major transport links: Connected to neighbouring Danish islands and Jutland by the Great Belt Fixed Link - road and rail bridges that provide direct vehicle and train access across the central strait. The Øresund Bridge links the Copenhagen area to Sweden on the east coast of the island.
What to See #
- Copenhagen: Denmark's capital and largest city, located on the eastern shore of the island and serving as the country's political, cultural and transport hub.
- Kronborg Castle: The Renaissance castle at Helsingør, famous as the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet and protected as a historic monument.
- Roskilde Cathedral: A medieval brick cathedral that is the traditional burial site for Danish monarchs and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
How to Get to Zealand #
Zealand is served by Copenhagen Airport (CPH). From Copenhagen central station, regional trains and buses link to towns across the island. The Øresund Bridge connects Zealand to Sweden by rail and car; ferries operate to smaller islands and coastal towns.
Tips for Visiting Zealand #
