Zbarazh Castle

Zbarazh Castle is a 17th-century fortified complex located in the town of Zbarazh in Ternopil Oblast, western Ukraine. It is notable as a preserved bastion-style fortress and as the site of an important mid-17th-century siege.

The castle complex offers ramparts and bastions that visitors can walk to get broad views over the town and surrounding agricultural plain. Inside, converted rooms host displays about local history and the castle’s military past, and the courtyard layout is a clear example of early modern defensive architecture.

Construction of the fortress dates to the early 17th century when the regional Polish-Lithuanian magnate class built or rebuilt many fortified residences. The castle was besieged in 1649 during the Khmelnytsky Uprising, an event that marked its significance in regional conflict. Over subsequent centuries the complex changed hands and functions before being preserved and adapted for museum use.

The castle occupies a prominent site within the town of Zbarazh in Ternopil Oblast, western Ukraine. It stands amid a landscape of small towns and agricultural land in the historical Galicia region.
