Zakouma National Park
Wildlife Reserve Chadian national park noted for recovering elephant populations
Chadian park in the southeast protecting savanna wildlife, notably recovering elephant herds and predators; tourists visit on guided safaris and birding trips.
Zakouma National Park is a protected savannah and floodplain park in southeastern Chad that protects mixed savannah, woodland and seasonal wetlands. It is one of the most important protected areas in central Africa for large mammals.
The park supports populations of elephants, buffalo, lions, giraffes and numerous waterbirds that concentrate on the Bahr Salamat floodplain during the rainy season. Visitors come principally for wildlife viewing on guided game drives and boat trips along the floodplain.
Established in the 1960s, the park suffered heavy poaching in the late 20th and early 21st centuries; international support and new management arrangements from around 2010 helped reduce illegal killing and rebuild key wildlife populations. Ongoing management focuses on anti-poaching, community engagement and habitat protection.
Zakouma is located in southeastern Chad in the Salamat region, centered on the Bahr Salamat river system, which forms the park’s ecological nucleus and seasonal wetlands.
- Conservation history: Management by a conservation NGO since 2010 has significantly reduced poaching and helped recover elephant and buffalo populations compared with the severe declines of the 2000s.
- Viewing season: Best wildlife viewing is during and shortly after the rainy season when animals concentrate on the floodplains and watering sites.
What to See #
- Bahr Salamat floodplain: Seasonally flooded floodplains along the Bahr Salamat are the park's key wildlife habitats and the area where large herbivores gather during the wet season.
How to Get to Zakouma National Park #
Zakouma National Park in Chad is reached most commonly from N’Djamena by charter flight to the park airstrip arranged by lodges and tour operators, or by long overland 4x4 journeys on unpaved roads from regional towns; major safari camps typically organize transfers for guests.
Because public transport and road conditions can be challenging, visitors generally book an organized tour or lodge transfer from N’Djamena or nearby regional airstrips rather than attempting independent travel.
Tips for Visiting Zakouma National Park #
- Travel to Zakouma in the dry season (roughly November-April) for the best wildlife concentrations and easier game drives; the park's management has dramatically improved elephant sightings in recent years, so timing matters.
- Book through African Parks/official park partners and use park‑run camps or authorised operators - flights or charters to the Zakouma airstrip and organised game drives are the practical way to visit and also support conservation work.
- Include a river or boat sortie on the Salamat River in your itinerary where available; many visitors focus only on land drives and miss the rich birdlife and riverine sightings that boat trips reliably produce.
