Yuma Territorial Prison

The Yuma Territorial Prison is a historic prison complex in Yuma, Arizona, established in 1876 as the main penitentiary for the Arizona Territory. It is significant as one of the best-preserved territorial-era prison sites in the American Southwest.

The site contains original late 19th-century cellblocks, an exterior guard tower, and interpretive museum spaces that explain prison life, notable inmates, and escape attempts. Exhibits include original fixtures, prisoner records, photographs, and recreated cells to illustrate conditions from the territorial period.

Built by the Arizona Territorial government beginning in 1876 to house convicted men under territorial law, the prison operated until 1909 when newer facilities replaced it. After closure the compound fell into partial ruin and was later conserved and developed into the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park and museum.

The prison occupies a raised site overlooking the Colorado River adjacent to Yuma city; it sits above the river and within sight of downtown Yuma in southwestern Arizona. The park is the principal historic attraction associated with Yuma’s territorial history.
