Ytre Norskøya is a small island in the Svalbard archipelago off the northwest coast of Spitsbergen, known for the remains of a 17th-century Dutch whaling station. The island preserves physical evidence of early commercial whaling activity in the Arctic.

On the island visitors and researchers encounter the ruins of shore-based whaling infrastructure - blubber ovens, tryworks and scattered whale bone deposits - which illustrate how whales were processed onshore by early modern whalers. The features are of archaeological and historical interest rather than recreational attractions.

The island was used by Dutch whalers during the early 17th century as a processing site during the Arctic whaling boom. Those shore stations were seasonal and were abandoned as whaling patterns and technology changed later in the century.

Ytre Norskøya lies off northwest Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago, within the territory administered by Norway. It is reached by expedition boat from settlements on Spitsbergen; landing and activity on the island are regulated to protect both cultural remains and the Arctic environment.

  • Heritage remains: Contains archaeological remains of 17th-century shore-based whaling, including blubber ovens and structural foundations.
  • Access and protection: Accessible only by boat and located within the Svalbard archipelago under Norwegian jurisdiction, visits are subject to environmental and cultural protection rules.
