Archaeological Site Large Yayoi-period archaeological site with reconstructed villages
The Yoshinogari site in Saga Prefecture reconstructs a large Yayoi-period settlement with pit dwellings, moats and a museum collection; visitors explore reconstructions, learn about prehistoric agriculture and regional early-Japan archaeology.
Yoshinogari site is a large Yayoi period archaeological complex on Kyushu island in Saga Prefecture, Japan, identified as an important settlement and ceremonial site dating roughly from the 3rd century BCE to the 3rd century CE. It is one of Japan’s foremost archaeological parks for the Yayoi era and includes extensive excavated remains.
The park presents reconstructed pit dwellings, raised-floor storehouses, longhouses, wooden palisades, and moats based on archaeological findings, plus a museum housing artifacts such as pottery, bronze mirrors, and tools. The site covers many hectares and is laid out to show settlement patterns, defensive works, and areas interpreted as ritual or communal spaces.
Excavations in the late 20th century revealed the scale of the settlement and prompted the creation of the open-air park and museum to preserve and interpret the remains. Since opening to the public the site has been used for research, education, and cultural events.
Yoshinogari lies near the modern town of Yoshinogari and is about 10-15 km from Saga City, on relatively flat coastal plains of northern Kyushu; it is accessible by regional road and public transport services.
- Visitor suitability: Outdoor reconstructions make the site especially suitable for family visits and educational trips; many exhibits and signs include English-language explanations.
- Museum highlights: Combine a visit with the on-site museum to see pottery, tools, and other artifacts from excavations that illustrate daily life in the Yayoi era.
