York Castle is a medieval castle complex in the centre of York, England, originally founded soon after the Norman Conquest as a royal fortress and administrative centre. The site has undergone multiple phases of rebuilding, destruction and reuse over the centuries.
The most visible surviving structure is Clifford’s Tower, a stone keep standing on the raised motte that dominates the site and the riverside skyline. The wider castle precinct historically contained walls, baileys and buildings used for royal administration, justice and garrison functions.
Over time much of the castle complex was demolished or redeveloped, with the tower retained as a historic monument. The site has been managed for conservation and public access, with interpretive information about its medieval role and later uses.
The castle sits in central York beside the River Ouse and is within walking distance of the city’s other historic attractions and transport links.
