How to Get to Yeosu
Yeosu is accessible by its small domestic Yeosu Airport (RSU) and by rail at Yeosu Expo Station (여수엑스포역), which has KTX and regional services. Many visitors arrive by KTX from Seoul or by intercity bus from Gwangju and other cities; choose KTX for speed and buses for lower cost.
Yeosu Airport (RSU): Yeosu Airport is the nearest airport, served by domestic flights (mainly from Seoul Gimpo). From Yeosu Airport you can take a city bus to downtown Yeosu or Yeosu Expo Station (standard bus fare ~1,200 KRW, journey ~20-30 minutes). Taxis from the airport into the city centre take around 15-25 minutes and typically cost about 10,000-15,000 KRW.
Gwangju Airport (KWJ): Gwangju Airport (about 70-90 km from Yeosu) is an alternative with more frequent flights. From Gwangju Airport you can catch an intercity express bus or a transfer to Gwangju’s bus/train terminals and then an express bus to Yeosu; the bus leg takes roughly 90-120 minutes and fares are commonly in the 10,000-12,000 KRW range.
Train: Yeosu Expo Station (여수엑스포역) is the main rail gateway. KTX services connect Yeosu with major cities (Seoul via the Honam Line), with journey times from Seoul typically around 3-3.5 hours; KTX fares are in the ~50,000-60,000 KRW range depending on seat/class. Local regional trains also call at Yeosu stations for connections from nearby cities like Suncheon.
Bus: Yeosu’s intercity buses arrive at Yeosu Bus Terminal (여수종합버스터미널). Express buses run from Seoul and Gwangju and take about 4-4.5 hours from Seoul and 1.5-2 hours from Gwangju; fares vary by route and operator but expect roughly 20,000-30,000 KRW from Seoul and about 10,000-12,000 KRW from Gwangju.
How to Get Around Yeosu
Yeosu is best reached by KTX (Yeosu Expo Station) for speed or by intercity bus for a cheaper option; domestic flights via Yeosu Airport are useful for specific connections. Inside the city, use local buses and taxis for convenience, and plan to walk between waterfront attractions.
- KTX / Intercity train (50,000-60,000 KRW) - KTX to Yeosu Expo Station is the fastest public option from Seoul and major southwestern hubs - expect around 3-3.5 hours from Seoul. Trains are comfortable, punctual, and ideal if you want to maximize sightseeing time; book in advance for weekend travel. Regional (ITX/Mugunghwa) services are cheaper but significantly slower and less frequent.
- Intercity bus (10,000-30,000 KRW) - Express buses connect Yeosu Bus Terminal with Seoul, Gwangju, and other cities. Buses are frequent from nearby provincial hubs and are usually cheaper than KTX; journeys from Seoul take about 4-4.5 hours, from Gwangju 1.5-2 hours. Check timetables at major bus terminals or operator websites, and arrive early in holiday seasons.
- Flights / Yeosu Airport transfers (1,200-15,000 KRW) - Yeosu Airport handles domestic flights (notably from Seoul Gimpo). From the airport you can take a local city bus (standard fare ~1,200 KRW) or a taxi into central Yeosu in about 15-25 minutes. Flights are convenient if you're connecting from other Korean islands or tight on time but fewer frequencies mean planning ahead is important.
- Local buses (1,200 KRW) - Yeosu's local bus network covers the city and nearby coastal areas; standard single-ride fares are around 1,200 KRW with card discounts possible. Buses are the cheapest way to reach many tourist spots (aquarium, Odongdo) but routes can be indirect; bring a T-money or compatible transport card for convenience.
- Taxis / Ride-hail (3,800-12,000 KRW) - Taxis are widely available and useful for short trips or if you're travelling with luggage; flag fare in provincial cities is typically around 3,800 KRW with fares rising by distance - many common short trips cost 4,000-12,000 KRW. Kakao T works in the region for calling taxis; drivers may have limited English, so have your destination written in Korean.
- Car rental (50,000-80,000 KRW) - Renting a car gives the most flexibility for exploring the coast, islands, and outlying attractions at your own pace. Rentals typically start from around 50,000-80,000 KRW per day depending on season and vehicle. Parking in central Yeosu is available but can be tight during festivals and the summer tourist season.
- Walking - Many of Yeosu's central sights - the fish markets, the waterfront promenade, and parts of the Old Town - are compact and pleasant to explore on foot. Walking is the best way to soak up the harbour views and cafés; bring comfortable shoes and be ready for some hills along the coast.
