Yellowstone Lake is a large high-elevation lake within Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, United States, and is one of the largest high-altitude lakes in North America. It dominates the park’s central and eastern sections and is a major natural feature of the Yellowstone caldera.
Shoreline attractions include hydrothermal areas where hot springs and fumaroles reach the lake, a number of marinas offering boat tours and launches, and shoreline viewpoints for wildlife and scenic vistas. The lake supports recreational fishing for native cutthroat trout and seasonal boating; services and tours operate mainly in the summer months.
The lake occupies part of the Yellowstone volcanic caldera and its basin has been shaped by volcanic and geothermal processes. The surrounding landscape includes mixed forest, thermal features, and steep shorelines that reflect the park’s geologic activity.
Geographically the lake lies within Yellowstone National Park in northwestern Wyoming, surrounded by park roads and facilities; access is via park roads and nearby visitor centers, with most visitor services concentrated on the lake’s northern and western shores.
