Yelagin Island

Yelagin Island is a low, landscaped island on the northern side of central St. Petersburg, Russia, known for its public park and historic palace. The site functions as a major urban green space and cultural venue within the city’s river and canal system.

The island’s main attractions are its extensive parkland with formal paths, ponds, and recreational areas, and the central palace which hosts exhibitions and concerts; the park covers several hectares and is used for walking, boating, and seasonal events. Facilities for cycling, picnicking, and small boating are concentrated near the palace and the island’s promenades.

The present park and palace complex was developed in the 19th century as an imperial leisure estate and later adapted for public use; the palace building has been restored and repurposed for cultural functions. Over time the island transitioned from a private estate to a municipal park and concert venue.

Geographically the island sits just north of the Neva River delta inside the city’s network of canals, within walking or short tram distance of St. Petersburg’s central districts. It is linked to the city by road and pedestrian bridges and lies among several other small islands and parks.
