Yaxchilan
Archaeological Site Maya archaeological site notable for riverfront ruins
A major Maya riverside site on the Usumacinta with monumental stone lintels and carved stelae; visitors travel by boat to explore jungle ruins, ceremonial plazas and ancient hieroglyphic inscriptions.
Yaxchilan is an ancient Maya archaeological site on the banks of the Usumacinta River in the Lacandon rainforest of Chiapas, Mexico. It is a major Classic-period city-state noted for exceptionally fine stone carving and riverine setting.
The site features monumental architecture clustered along steep riverbanks, including palaces, plazas and temple-pyramids with intricately carved lintels and stelae. Many lintels show royal portraits and historical scenes; the layout includes large plazas and acropoleis grouped around ceremonial spaces.
Yaxchilan was constructed and occupied by Maya rulers during the Classic period, roughly between the 4th and 9th centuries AD, and played an active role in regional politics and warfare. The surviving monuments and inscriptions record dynastic history and interactions with neighbouring polities.
The site lies in the Lacandon jungle on the Mexican side of the Usumacinta River in Chiapas; river boat trips from nearby riverside towns are the standard way to reach the ruins. Dense forest and steep riverbanks frame the ruins, which remain remote compared with lowland tourist sites.
- Access: Most visitors arrive by boat along the Usumacinta River from nearby river towns; the river approach is the usual access route.
- Sculpted lintels: Famous for finely carved limestone lintels and sculpted reliefs that depict rulers, dynastic events and warfare from the Classic Maya period.
What to See #
- Central Acropolis: A riverside complex of royal and administrative buildings with carved stone lintels and doorways; several of the finest Classic-period lintels were found here.
- Great Plaza: A large open plaza framed by major temples and palace groups that served as the site's political and ritual heart.
- Structure 33: A prominent multi-room palace and court complex noted for its well-preserved carved lintels depicting rulers and ceremonies.
How to Get to Yaxchilan #
The Maya site of Yaxchilan is accessible only from the Usumacinta River; visitors normally travel by boat from the riverside town of Frontera Corozal. Frontera Corozal is reached by road from the Chiapas highlands (Palenque is the most common gateway-reach Palenque by bus or car, then continue by road east to Frontera Corozal; this is a multi‑hour drive). From Frontera Corozal small motorboats take visitors upriver to the archaeological site and its riverside landing.
Tips for Visiting Yaxchilan #
- Take the earliest boat from Frontera Corozal across the Usumacinta River so you arrive before mid-morning boat crowds and heat - early visits also improve chances to see wildlife along the jungle trails.
- Plan to join a licensed local guide at the river landing; the main archaeological groups (acropolis and ballcourt) are spread through dense foliage and guides point out the important carved lintels and hieroglyphic panels many visitors miss.
- Enter via the river dock path and allow time to climb the main structures - the upper plazas and stairways give far better perspective and photo opportunities than staying at ground level.
Best Time to Visit Yaxchilan #
Best visited during the dry season (November-April) when trails and river access are easier and insect activity is lower.
