Yasnaya Polyana

Yasnaya Polyana is the former family estate and residence of the writer Leo Tolstoy, located in Tula Oblast, Russia, and is preserved as a museum-reserve celebrating his life and work. Tolstoy was born in 1828 and spent much of his life at the estate; he died in 1910.

The property includes the writer’s preserved house, a park, outbuildings, a small school he founded, and his grave set within the grounds. Exhibits focus on Tolstoy’s manuscripts, personal effects, and the estate’s role in his writing and social experiments.

The manor was converted into a museum and memorial following Tolstoy’s death and has been managed as a cultural reserve since the early 20th century. The layout and many original interiors have been retained to reflect the 19th-century setting.

The estate lies in Tula Oblast approximately a short drive west of the city of Tula, in a rural parkland setting with tree-lined avenues and ponds, roughly within reach of Moscow by road.
