Yasaka Shrine, also known as Gion Shrine, is a Shinto shrine located in Kyoto’s Gion district that is traditionally dated to the 7th century. It functions as a religious centre for the surrounding neighbourhood and a focal point for seasonal festivals.

The shrine is best known for its central role in the Gion Matsuri festival in July, which features processions, floats and ceremonial rites drawing large crowds. The precinct contains the main hall and worship areas, a large two-storey romon gate facing Maruyama Park, and a series of subsidiary shrines.

Over the centuries the shrine precinct has been rebuilt and repaired repeatedly while retaining its role as a civic and religious landmark in eastern Kyoto. It sits at the eastern end of Shijo Avenue, adjacent to Maruyama Park and close to the Kamo River.

  • Founding era: Traditionally founded in the 7th century (often cited as 656), the shrine has been rebuilt and expanded several times across the centuries.
  • Gion Matsuri festival: Home of the Gion Matsuri, a major festival held annually in July that includes processions and floats and is one of Japan's best-known urban festivals.

What to See #

  • Main Hall (Honden): The honden and haiden form the main worship buildings where Shinto rituals and offerings are performed, and they are reconstructed periodically in keeping with shrine tradition.
  • Romon gate: The two-storey romon gate marks one of the principal entrances to the precinct and is a prominent architectural feature facing Shijo-dori and Maruyama Park.
  • Subsidiary shrines: A series of subsidiary shrines and prayer alcoves occupy the precinct and are often visited during festival processions and daily worship by locals and tourists.

How to Get to Yasaka Shrine #

Yasaka Shrine is a 10-15 minute walk from Gion-Shijo Station (Keihan Line) and about 20 minutes from Kyoto Station by bus (routes 100 or 206 to Gion). It’s centrally located in eastern Kyoto’s Gion district, adjacent to Maruyama Park.

Tips for Visiting Yasaka Shrine #

  • Visit during the evening Gion Matsuri month (July) to see lanterns and festival processions, though it becomes extremely crowded.
  • Enter through the main torii on the Shijo-dori side for the classic approach; the shrine precinct is compact but has multiple gates and sub-shrines to explore.
  • Avoid peak midday in summer - the dense vermilion latticework traps heat and the walkways get congested.
