Yaku-shima
Island Island of ancient cedar forests and rich biodiversity
Yakushima is an island south of Kyushu known for ancient cedar forests-including Jōmon Sugi-humid mountain trails, heavy rainfall, and UNESCO recognition that draws hikers and nature photographers.
Yakushima is a forested island in Kagoshima Prefecture known for its ancient cedar forests, high rainfall and rugged mountain interior. The island’s ecology includes internationally significant Yakusugi cedars and a mix of temperate and subtropical ecosystems.
Key natural attractions include ancient cedars such as Jōmon Sugi, moss-covered ravines like Shiratani Unsuikyo and Mount Miyanoura, the island’s highest point at about 1,936 metres. The landscape supports endemic plants and wildlife and offers hiking routes from short circuits to multi-day backcountry treks.
Human settlement on Yakushima is longstanding but sparse; the island’s forests were logged in the past and later protected, leading to its inscription as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site in 1993. Conservation and sustainable tourism are prominent aspects of contemporary management.
Yakushima lies off the southern coast of Kyushu in Kagoshima Prefecture, about 60 km south of the Kyushu mainland. The main entry points are ferry and air services to the island’s ports and small airport, and the interior is mountainous with limited road access to trailheads.
