Main image

Xuan Thuy National Park is a coastal wetland in Vietnam’s Red River Delta and was one of the country’s first sites listed under the Ramsar Convention in 1989. It protects intertidal mudflats, tidal channels and saltmarsh that are important for migratory waterbirds.

The park is valued for birdwatching and low-tide mudflat scenery. Boat trips and guided walks allow close observation of shorebirds, waders and other waterbirds that gather in large numbers during the northern winter months. The mosaic of mudflats, tidal creeks and salt-tolerant vegetation is the main attraction rather than built facilities.

The area has been recognised for international wetland conservation since its Ramsar listing in 1989 and has been managed under Vietnam’s protected-area framework to conserve habitats and migratory bird populations. Management has focused on balancing local fisheries and aquaculture with habitat protection.

The park lies on Vietnam’s north coast at the mouth of the Red River, on the Red River Delta shoreline. It is located to the southeast of Hanoi in the delta plain and is reached via local coastal roads and village jetties.

  • Birdwatching season: Best months for waterbird watching are the northern winter months when large numbers of migratory shorebirds and waterfowl concentrate on the mudflats.
  • Access and viewing: Local boat trips from village jetties provide close views of intertidal flats and mangrove fringes; bring binoculars and tide-aware timing.
