How to Get to Xinyuan County
Xinyuan County is most easily reached via Yining (Ghulja): Yining Qapqal Airport (YIN) and Yining Railway Station are the primary gateways for the Ili region. From Yining you continue to Xinyuan by frequent intercity buses or by taxi for shorter, faster transfers.
Yining Qapqal Airport (YIN): The closest airport to Xinyuan County, Yining (also written Ghulja) handles regular domestic flights from Ürümqi and other regional hubs. From the airport you can take the airport shuttle or an official taxi into Yining city centre; shuttle buses are the cheapest option (approx. CNY 10-30, ~30-40 minutes) and taxis typically take ~20-35 minutes (approx. CNY 40-80). From Yining city there are frequent intercity buses to Xinyuan County (see Bus below).
Ürümqi Diwopu International Airport (URC): Ürümqi is the regional aviation hub with many more flight choices; if you arrive here you can catch a domestic flight to Yining or continue by rail/bus. Flights Ürümqi→Yining take about 1 hour (fares vary by season); alternatively allow a full day for coach or conventional train connections from Ürümqi to the Ili region (see Train & Bus card). Local airport express buses and taxis connect URC with Ürümqi city (airport bus approx. CNY 25-40, taxi approx. CNY 70-120, ~40-60 minutes depending on traffic).
Train: Yining Railway Station is the main rail gateway for the Ili region; services are conventional (non-high-speed) and link Yining with Ürümqi and other regional points. Trains are slower than flights but useful for night travel - expect long journey times (many services take several hours up to overnight) and ticket prices that vary by seat/berth class. Check China Railway (12306) for schedules and seat/berth pricing before travel.
Bus: Intercity and long-distance coaches are the most flexible way to reach Xinyuan County from Yining, the surrounding Ili towns, and Ürümqi. Buses depart Yining’s long-distance bus station for Xinyuan frequently; typical Yining→Xinyuan journey times are around 1-1.5 hours with fares generally in the CNY 10-40 range depending on service and route. Longer coaches from Ürümqi take more time (many hours) and cost correspondingly more - these are common and a practical option if flights are not convenient.
How to Get Around Xinyuan County
Getting around Xinyuan County is best done by a mix of intercity bus and taxi: buses are cheap and frequent between towns, while taxis (or DiDi where available) save time for door-to-door travel. Within the county seat, walking, bikes and short taxi hops cover most needs - plan longer trips to other prefecture towns in advance.
- Intercity bus (CNY 10-40) - Regular coaches connect Yining with Xinyuan County and other towns in the Ili prefecture; buses depart from Yining's long-distance bus station. Journeys from Yining to Xinyuan typically take about 1-1.5 hours; buy tickets at the station on the day or the day before during busy periods. Buses are the most economical way to travel between county towns and are well suited for daytime travel.
- Train (CNY 20-200+) - Conventional (non-high-speed) rail serves Yining Railway Station, linking the Ili region with Ürümqi and other nodes. Trains can be long - many services are overnight or take most of the day - but are reliable and comfortable for longer distances; book via China Railway (12306) in advance for popular dates. Expect varying seat/berth classes and corresponding price differences.
- Taxi (CNY 6-150) - Taxis are widely available in Yining and the county seat and are the fastest way to reach specific villages or remote spots within Xinyuan. In-town fares are cheap for short hops, but intercity trips (for example from Yining Airport straight to Xinyuan) will cost more; confirm the fare or ask the driver to use the meter. During peak local festivals or winter conditions allow extra time and expect slightly higher fares.
- Ride-hailing (DiDi) (CNY 10-200) - DiDi operates in larger Ili towns such as Yining, though availability can be patchy in more remote parts of Xinyuan County. Use DiDi for point-to-point trips within towns and occasional intercity runs when drivers are available; fares are similar to or slightly above standard taxis and surge pricing can apply. Have a backup plan (local taxi number or bus) if ride-hailing is scarce.
- Bicycle / E-bike rental (CNY 5-40) - In the county seat and town centres you can rent bicycles or electric bikes for short excursions; this is handy for exploring local streets and nearby scenic areas at a relaxed pace. Rental prices are low and often charged hourly or daily; helmets are not always provided so bring your own if you prefer. Road conditions vary outside town, so e-bikes are more comfortable for longer local trips.
- Walking - Walking is practical within Xinyuan's town centre and market areas - distances are compact and streets are easy to navigate on foot. Use walking for short errands, market visits and to reach local eateries; bring sun protection in summer and warm layers in cold months. For anything beyond the town centre choose a bus or taxi.
