Xinjiang Tianshan
Nature Reserve Vast mountain range with glaciers and alpine biodiversity
Xinjiang’s Tianshan range offers glacier-fed peaks, alpine meadows, cedar forests and highland lakes; trekkers and climbers come for mountain passes, nomadic culture encounters and summer wildflower displays.
A section of the Tianshan mountain system located in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of northwest China, notable for its glaciated peaks and alpine ecosystems. It forms part of the larger Tian Shan range that spans Central Asia.
High-elevation landscapes include glaciated ridges, cirques, and alpine meadows, with many peaks rising above 4,000 meters. The area supports a range of mountain habitats and serves as an important water source for lower-lying regions.
The landscape is the result of long-term tectonic uplift and repeated glaciation that carved valleys and deposited moraines. Glaciers and alpine soils have shaped local ecosystems and hydrology over geological time.
The site lies within Xinjiang in northwestern China, occupying mountainous terrain well inland from the regional capital Ürümqi. The range sits within a continental interior climate and is separated from lowland deserts by steep elevation gradients.
- Visiting season: Best visited in late spring to early autumn when highland roads and passes are most likely to be open and alpine scenery is accessible.
