Xativa Castle

A medieval fortress complex on two adjacent hilltops overlooking the town of Xàtiva in the Valencia region of Spain, notable for its strategic position and long recorded history. The site today comprises a series of enclosed forts, walls and towers visible from the town below.

Walkable ramps and paths connect the two main fortifications, allowing visitors to inspect surviving walls, gates and defensive towers and to walk between viewpoints that overlook the Albaida valley. The complex contains ruins and archaeological remains from successive periods of occupation and offers wide views across the surrounding plain and town.

The site has been fortified since antiquity with successive phases under Iberian, Roman and Moorish control; much of the visible medieval fabric dates from Muslim and later Christian reconstructions. The castle suffered significant damage in 1707 during the War of the Spanish Succession and has since survived as a partly ruined but interpretable monument.

Located above the town of Xàtiva in the Valencian Community, the castle crowns a ridge that rises over the urban area and is accessible from the town by road and footpaths.
