Xalapa Travel Guide
City Cultural hub and capital of Veracruz, Mexico
Set in misty highlands, Xalapa attracts museum visitors to its Anthropology Museum, coffee lovers to local cafés, and nature walkers to the surrounding cloud forests and botanical gardens.
Why Visit Xalapa? #
Perched in the highlands of Veracruz, Xalapa attracts travelers with a rich coffee culture, leafy Parque Juárez and the Museo de Antropología de Xalapa (MAX). The city’s cafés pour regional coffee and dishes flavored by jalapeño chiles, while colonial streets and the neoclassical cathedral provide a relaxed cultural backdrop. Year-round music festivals and lively university life create an animated local scene.
Who's Xalapa For?
Xalapa is a regional culinary hub-smoky chiles, mole, tamales, and famed Veracruz coffee. Mercado Jáuregui and Callejón del Torno showcase street snacks; mid-range restaurants serve regional seafood and mountain produce, with meals typically under MXN 200-350.
Surrounded by cloud forests and volcanoes, Xalapa is a gateway to Cofre de Perote and nearby cascadas. Jardín Botánico and Parque Ecológico are great for birdwatching and orchids; seasonal cloud cover creates lush, mossy landscapes year-round.
Hiking, mountain biking, and canyoning are accessible-guided treks up Cofre de Perote and nearby Pico de Orizaba offer serious climbs. Local operators arrange multi-day trips; expect basic equipment rental and moderate prices compared with coastal tourist centers.
Xalapa is affordable and student-friendly, with budget hostels near the city center and lively markets for cheap eats. Public buses link to national parks and nearby cities, making independent overland travel easy though not as backpacker-focused as coastal hotspots.
University nightlife keeps bars and live-music venues busy-trendy spots around Callejón del Torno and big nights at Cantinas in the Centro Histórico. Weekends feature jazz, trova, and rock shows; the scene is energetic but more local than touristy.
Xalapa offers mellow romantic options-walks through tree-lined plazas, cozy cafés, and botanical gardens ideal for afternoon dates. Boutique guesthouses and mid-range hotels near the Centro Histórico provide intimate stays without the crowds found in beach destinations.

How to Get to Xalapa
Xalapa is served directly by the small El Lencero airport (JAL) and is within driving distance of Veracruz's General Heriberto Jara International Airport (VER). There is no passenger rail; most visitors arrive by air to VER or by intercity bus to Xalapa's main ADO terminal.
El Lencero (JAL): El Lencero is Xalapa’s small regional airport, about 10 km east of the city centre. From the terminal a taxi or taxi app ride to Centro Histórico takes roughly 20-30 minutes; expect about 150-250 MXN depending on time of day and luggage. There is limited commercial service, so many travellers connect via larger airports.
General Heriberto Jara International (VER): The Veracruz airport (VER), near Boca del Río, is the closest major international airport (≈65-75 km from Xalapa). You can get to Xalapa by taking an ADO bus from Veracruz’s bus terminal to Terminal de Autobuses de Xalapa (journey ~1.5-2 hours, about 90-150 MXN) or by private transfer/taxi (roughly 1-1.5 hours; private transfers commonly cost several hundred to around 1,000 MXN depending on vehicle and booking). Car rental at VER is also an option for the drive up to Xalapa.
Train: There is no regular intercity passenger rail service serving Xalapa. Freight lines exist in the region, but passenger train options are not available for travellers.
Bus: Xalapa’s main bus hub is the Terminal de Autobuses de Xalapa (Terminal ADO). ADO and regional carriers run frequent services to and from Veracruz, Coatepec and other Veracruz state towns; Veracruz→Xalapa trips take about 1.5-2 hours and typically cost in the 90-150 MXN range. Longer routes to Mexico City take around 4-5 hours and are offered by long‑distance operators (prices commonly 300-500 MXN depending on class). Buy tickets at station counters or on the carriers’ websites/apps.
How to Get Around Xalapa
Xalapa is most easily navigated by a mix of colectivos/local buses and rideshare/taxis for convenience; intercity travel is dominated by ADO buses. The Centro Histórico is very walkable, but the city's hilly terrain makes taxis or rideshares a better option for longer or luggage‑heavy trips.
- Colectivos & Local buses (8-20 MXN) - Shared minibuses (colectivos) and local bus lines connect neighbourhoods and nearby towns such as Coatepec and Banderilla. Fares are low and cash‑based; routes can be informal, so ask drivers or locals which colectivo goes to your destination. These are the cheapest way to get around but can be crowded and less comfortable during peak times.
- Taxis & Rideshares (40-200 MXN) - Taxis operate across the city; not all use meters so agree a fare before you travel. Rideshare apps (Uber, Didi) operate in Xalapa and are usually more reliable for fixed pricing and card payments. Use rideshares for late‑night trips or when you have luggage; expect faster, more predictable service than street taxis.
- Intercity buses (ADO and regional lines) (90-500 MXN) - The Terminal ADO in Xalapa handles most intercity services. ADO offers comfortable first‑class options to Veracruz, Mexico City and other destinations; buses are frequent and you can buy tickets online or at the terminal. For longer trips choose a higher‑class ticket (more legroom, onboard restroom) and arrive at the station early for boarding.
- Car rental & driving (≈700-1,500 MXN/day) - Renting a car gives flexibility to explore Veracruz state's cloud forest roads and nearby towns, but Xalapa's centre has narrow, sometimes cobbled streets and limited parking. Trails and scenic drives are rewarding, but be prepared for steep, winding roads and occasional heavy traffic into town. Consider a small, fuel‑efficient car for easier parking and handling.
- Cycling & scooters (20-60 MXN/hour) - Xalapa is hilly, so cycling can be demanding; some flat sections in the Centro Histórico are pleasant for short rides. Bike rentals exist locally but are less common than in larger cities; helmets and lights are recommended. Electric scooters are not widespread-check with local rental shops before relying on them.
- Walking - The historic centre is compact and best explored on foot - plazas, museums and cafés are often a short walk from one another. Streets can be steep and surfaces uneven in parts, so wear comfortable shoes and allow time for uphill sections.
