Würzburg Residence with the Court Gardens and Residence Square

The Würzburg Residence with the Court Gardens and Residence Square is an 18th century Baroque palace complex in Würzburg, Bavaria, recognized for its architecture and interior decoration. The main palace was constructed in the early 18th century under architect Balthasar Neumann.

The palace interior is renowned for its grand staircase and large ceiling frescoes, which are principal attractions on guided tours. The adjacent Court Gardens provide formal Baroque landscape setting and framed views of the palace façade.

Construction of the residence took place principally from 1720 to 1744 under the direction of Balthasar Neumann for the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg; interior decoration involved leading painters and craftsmen of the period. The complex functioned as the princely seat and has been restored following wartime damage in the 20th century.

The complex sits in the centre of Würzburg on the north bank of the River Main in Bavaria, opposite the Marienberg Fortress and within walking distance of the city centre.
