Würzburg Residence

The Würzburg Residence is an 18th-century Baroque palace in Würzburg, Bavaria, notable for its grand architecture and interior decoration by leading artists of the period.

Visitors see monumental interior spaces, including a celebrated grand staircase with ceiling frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and richly decorated state rooms and salons. The formal Court Garden and parkland outside the palace are part of the ensemble and are open to visitors.

Construction of the Residence was carried out in the first half of the 18th century under the direction of architect Balthasar Neumann for the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg, with major interior decoration completed by artists such as Tiepolo. The building has been restored following wartime damage and later conservation work to preserve its Baroque interiors.

The palace stands in central Würzburg on the right bank of the Main River in Bavaria, within the city and visible from the area around the Marienberg Fortress.
