Park Alberta park preserving extensive Indigenous rock art and coulees
Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park in Alberta preserves Blackfoot rock art panels and hoodoos along the Milk River; visitors hike trails, view pictographs and learn Indigenous histories.
Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park (Áísínai’pi) in southern Alberta protects a rich concentration of Indigenous rock art carved and painted onto sandstone cliffs along the Milk River. The park combines cultural heritage with a distinctive coulee and hoodoo landscape.
The main attractions are the numerous petroglyph and pictograph panels set in narrow valleys and cliff faces, plus eroded hoodoos and steep-sided coulees that provide vantage points over the river. Short marked trails and interpretation at the visitor centre guide visitors to the principal panels and viewpoints.
The valley has been used for ceremonial and cultural purposes by Indigenous peoples for centuries, and the park was established to conserve both the rock art and the surrounding landscape. In 2019 the site, referred to as Áísínai’pi, received international recognition for its cultural value.
The park sits along the Milk River near Alberta’s southern border with Montana, roughly east of the town of Milk River and south of Lethbridge. The landscape is semi-arid and dominated by exposed sandstone cliffs and dry grassland.
- Extensive rock art: The park protects one of the largest concentrations of Indigenous rock art on the North American Plains, with panels located along a short interpretive trail system.
- Restricted access to some panels: Many rock art sites are culturally sensitive and may be protected behind fences or viewed from designated walkways to prevent damage and respect Indigenous significance.
