Wrangel Island
Island Arctic island wildlife refuge with polar bears and walrus
Far north in the Chukotka Arctic, Wrangel Island is a UNESCO site known for polar-bear denning, walrus haul-outs and large migratory bird colonies; access is by scientific expedition or small cruise.
Wrangel Island is a remote Arctic island in Russia’s Chukotka Autonomous Okrug noted for its rich high-latitude wildlife and high degree of ecological intactness. The island and nearby islets are internationally recognised for their role as breeding and denning grounds for polar bears and seabirds.
People travel to the island primarily for scientific research and limited, strictly controlled wildlife observation visits; there is no regular tourism infrastructure. The island supports large seasonal concentrations of polar bears, walrus haul-outs and diverse migratory bird colonies, making it important for Arctic conservation.
The island has a complex natural history and archaeological record; it was set aside for conservation in the late 20th and early 21st centuries and later recognised under international heritage frameworks. Wrangel Island is also known from paleontological research as a place where some Ice Age megafauna persisted into the later Holocene.
Geographically the island lies in the Arctic Ocean north of the Chukchi Sea, off the northern coast of the Russian Far East, and is administered from Chukotka. It is isolated from major settlements and reached only by ice-capable vessels or specially arranged flights.
- UNESCO designation: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site together with Herald Island for its undisturbed high-Arctic ecosystems and large populations of polar fauna.
- Wildlife importance: Important seasonal habitat and denning area for polar bears, and supports large colonies of migratory seabirds and other Arctic species.
How to Get to Wrangel Island #
Wrangel Island is remote and access is restricted; there are no regular public transport links. Visits are only possible via approved expeditions, charter flights or icebreaker voyages organized with Russian authorities (seasonal) and require permits from the Russian government and the nature reserve administration.
Tips for Visiting Wrangel Island #
- Wrangel Island is a strict nature reserve with extremely limited visitor access-plan to visit only as part of an organized, permit-backed expedition/cruise run by operators experienced with Russian Arctic permits.
- Travel windows are narrow: late summer (when sea ice retreats) is the practical season for wildlife viewing and landings, and operators emphasize small-group, guided landings to protect nesting birds and polar bear habitat.
Best Time to Visit Wrangel Island #
The best time to visit Wrangel Island is in midsummer (July-August) when sea ice retreats and guided wildlife expeditions are feasible.
