Works of Antoni Gaudí

The Works of Antoni Gaudí comprise seven major buildings and projects in Catalonia, Spain, designed by architect Antoni Gaudí between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The group is inscribed for its contribution to modern architecture and distinctive use of form, color and structural innovation.

Barcelona draws visitors for the sculptural facades and interiors of the Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà, where Gaudí’s organic forms, ironwork and ceramic mosaics are most visible. Park Güell offers integrated landscape design and panoramic viewpoints, while Palau Güell and Casa Vicens show earlier phases of Gaudí’s stylistic development.

The Crypt of Colònia Güell is visited for its experimental structural solutions and as a precursor to techniques used in later works. Together the sites demonstrate Gaudí’s evolving approach to structure, ornament and integration of craft techniques.

Gaudí worked from the 1880s until his death in 1926; his projects range from early eclectic residences to mature, highly idiosyncratic works that integrated iron, ceramic and masonry with novel structural ideas. Several projects were commissioned by industrialists and private patrons in Barcelona’s rapid urban expansion.

The monuments are concentrated in and around Barcelona in Catalonia, with most sites within the city and one (Colònia Güell) in the nearby municipality of Santa Coloma de Cervelló.
