Woolwich is a township in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo in southwestern Ontario, Canada, containing rural farmland and the communities of Elmira and St. Jacobs. It functions as a largely rural municipality with several small towns and villages serving local agriculture and tourism.
The township is known for its mixed agricultural landscape, farmers’ markets and small-town commercial centres. St. Jacobs features craft shops and tourist-oriented businesses, while Elmira hosts large community events that draw regional visitors.
The area was settled in the 19th century by German-speaking and Mennonite settlers who established farms and small mills that formed the cores of today’s communities. Over time the township developed retail and tourism services around its markets and cultural heritage.
Woolwich sits in southwestern Ontario within the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, about 20 km north of Kitchener and roughly 100 km west of Toronto, set among agricultural land and small river valleys.
