Wings of Tatev
Area Longest reversible cableway connecting Tatev Monastery and plateau
A 5.7‑kilometre reversible cable car links Halidzor to Tatev Monastery in Syunik; visitors ride for canyon panoramas and to tour the 9th‑century monastery complex.
Wings of Tatev is an aerial tramway in Syunik Province, southern Armenia, that links the village of Halidzor with the medieval Tatev Monastery across the Vorotan Gorge. It was constructed as part of the Tatev Revival Project and opened to the public in 2010.
The tramway spans roughly 5.75 kilometres and carries enclosed panoramic cabins over steep gorge and river scenery, providing a direct and scenic link to the monastery for visitors and reducing road travel time on the local road network. The ride is a primary reason most visitors take the route between Halidzor and Tatev.
The project was developed to improve access to Tatev Monastery and to stimulate local tourism and conservation of the cultural site. The upper station lies beside Tatev Monastery; the lower station with visitor facilities is at Halidzor village.
The tramway crosses the Vorotan Gorge in Syunik Province and is accessed via the local road network; it is widely used by tourists visiting Tatev Monastery and the surrounding landscape.

How to Get to Wings of Tatev #
The “Wings of Tatev” is the Tatev Aerial Tramway connecting the Halidzor station with Tatev Monastery. To get there, travel to the town of Goris (the nearest regional hub) and then continue by car or local marshrutka/minibus on the Goris-Tatev road to the Halidzor tramway station; the drive from Goris takes roughly 30-40 minutes depending on traffic and road conditions. Halidzor has parking and the tramway carries visitors down to the monastery; organized tours from Goris and Yerevan commonly include transfers.
Tips for Visiting Wings of Tatev #
- Ride the Wings of Tatev cable car early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid large tour groups and to get the clearest light for photos of the gorge and Tatev Monastery.
- Expect limited services around Halidzor and Tatev-ticket offices, kiosks and vendors may take only cash and machines can be unreliable, so carry some Armenian dram and confirm opening times in advance.
- Allow time to walk down from the Halidzor upper station to Tatev Monastery (steep but scenic) rather than immediately returning by cable car; that short descent offers different views most tour itineraries skip.
Best Time to Visit Wings of Tatev #
Best from late spring through early autumn (May-September) when weather is mild and access to the cable car and monastery is most reliable.
