Windermere
Lake England's largest natural lake in Lake District
In England’s Lake District, Windermere is the country’s largest natural lake, frequented for boat cruises, sailing, lakeside towns like Bowness and hill walks on surrounding fells.
Windermere is the largest natural lake in England, running roughly 17 kilometres north to south in the Lake District National Park, Cumbria. It is a major recreation and tourism destination known for boating, walking and lakeside villages.
Popular activities include sightseeing cruises, sailing, canoeing and lakeside walks. The settlements of Bowness-on-Windermere and Ambleside serve as primary visitor hubs with boat piers, shops and visitor services, and there are marked trails around much of the shoreline.
Windermere is a glacially formed lake that became a key Victorian tourist destination after the arrival of the railway in the 19th century, which opened the area to visitors from England’s industrial centres. The lake’s combination of water, islands and surrounding fells defines much of the region’s tourist appeal.
The lake lies in northwest England within Cumbria, with road and rail links to nearby towns and to larger centres such as Kendal; it forms the central water feature of the Lake District National Park.
- Size: At about 17 kilometres in length, it is the largest natural lake in England and a central feature of the Lake District National Park.
- Boat services: Regular passenger steamers and launch services operate on the lake, connecting key piers and providing sightseeing cruises.
What to See #
- Belle Isle: A wooded island near the south end of the lake and the largest island on Windermere, privately owned with historic houses and lakeside woodland.
- Lakeside towns: The towns of Bowness-on-Windermere and Ambleside, which provide main access points, boat services, visitor facilities and lakeside promenades.
How to Get to Windermere #
Windermere (the town and lake shore area) is served by Windermere railway station on the Windermere Branch Line; trains run from Oxenholme Lake District (on the West Coast Main Line) with a branch journey of about 20 minutes. Change at Oxenholme if arriving on intercity services.
From Windermere station the town centre and lake/Bowness-on-Windermere are a short walk of roughly 10-15 minutes; local buses also link Windermere with other towns in the Lake District.
Tips for Visiting Windermere #
- Take an early-morning or late-afternoon lake cruise from Bowness-on-Windermere to enjoy calmer water, better light for photos and fewer day-trip crowds.
- Use the regular passenger launches to hop between towns (Bowness, Ambleside, Lakeside) when possible-this avoids summer parking shortages in popular car parks.
- Head to the quieter eastern and northern shores (away from Bowness) for peaceful walking routes and viewpoints that most day-trippers miss.
Best Time to Visit Windermere #
Late spring through early autumn gives the best chance of milder weather and outdoor activities; avoid peak summer weekends if you want fewer crowds.
